Celebrating Botanic Gardens Month
May is Botanic Gardens Month, and over the next few weeks we are shining a light on the critical role botanic gardens play in leading research and safeguarding plant diversity.
This year’s theme for Botanic Gardens Month is ‘More than a Garden, Protecting our Plants and Landscapes’. Though you may know the Western Australian Botanic Garden as a beautiful destination, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes in plant science and conservation to ensure our precious flora is preserved for the future.
The Western Australian Botanic Garden holds collections of plants for scientific research, display and education. These collections also play a vital role in ex-situ conservation – conservation away from the plant’s natural habitat. We are working actively to prevent species extinctions and support their continued survival in the wild.
Botanic gardens are spaces of great social, cultural and heritage value, and so along with connecting our visitors to nature, we also work to promote the value of plant diversity and inspire the public to appreciate the vital role of Western Australian plants.
On Botanic Gardens Day, Sunday 26 May, we’ve got lots on in celebration of our favourite day of the year:
Friends of Kings Park Native Plant Sale
Pick up a unique native plant for your garden. Some plants are not found in commercial nurseries! The cultivation of rare species for these sales ensures their continued survival. Proceeds from the sale are put towards supporting research and projects in the park.

A Guided Walk Through WA
Join the Kings Park Volunteer Guides for a walk exploring the floral wonders of our state. Traversing the Southwest, Mallee, Mulga, Desert and Kimberley regions of the botanic garden, our volunteer guides will immerse you in WA landscapes.
9.45-11.15am and 12.45-2.15pm
